The page on screen is the page in the PDF.

A real page grid: margins, page breaks, and a zoom that is part of the layout, so text is set at the size you see it. PDF export renders the document's own pages — the PDF looks like the editor, not like a different program's idea of it. And when you need LaTeX, the export writes the real thing.

Quiet colors, and nothing blinking for your attention. Light and dark are two faces of one theme, so switching never leaves a panel behind — and you can make a theme of your own from four colors, with the opposite face worked out for you.

FEATURE RICHNESS

The basics are a given. The extras are the point.

Formulas edited as formulas, structure chosen from a list, numbering that takes care of itself: all of that is the floor, not the point. Here is what sits above it.

Taken as read: theorem environments, live numbering and cross-references, tables, figures, a bibliography, contents and lists, five paper sizes, two-sided margins, page numbers, running heads and numbered lines. What follows is what you will not find elsewhere.

Calculations, step by step

Derivatives, integrals, limits and series worked out inside the document, each step naming the rule it used — the product rule, L’Hôpital, integration by parts — in English or in Hebrew.

Tell it which letters are functions

In a paper f is a function and a is a number, and the notation never says so. Write f(x) = x^2 once and the calculation knows what f′(x) and f(3) mean — it works on your paper, not on symbols in general.

A diagram described in words

Say “a unit circle with an inscribed square” and get a real TikZ figure — compiled before it is offered to you, so what you see is what will print. The picture is stored in the document, so it still shows on a machine with no TeX.

Two people in one paper, at once

Send a link and you are both writing in the same document at the same time. You see each other’s caret, in its own colour with a name beside it. Nobody waits for a turn, and nothing is overwritten.

The rest of your sentence, offered

Manifold suggests how the sentence you are writing might finish — in English or in Hebrew. The model runs on your own machine, so what you write never leaves it.

Proofread in both languages

Spelling and grammar in English and in Hebrew, on your own machine. The Hebrew check reads things a dictionary cannot — a counted number wearing the wrong gender, say.

Programs, coloured and completed

Python, C, Rust, Haskell, SQL, pseudocode and more, set as programs rather than as paragraphs. The completion offers the language’s own words and the names already in your program, and needs nothing installed.

Long formulas break like text

An equation too wide for the column breaks after a relation rather than in the middle of a term — and the pieces stay one formula to edit, not three.

Hebrew inside a formula, set right

A Hebrew word in the middle of an equation is a right-to-left run inside a left-to-right one — the case everything else gets wrong, down to which end the colon lands on.

Every symbol it can draw, in one search

993 of them, found by name in the same search as everything else — no panel of your own to hunt through. A symbol whose name you know is one search away.

Every command shows you what it does

Search for a command and, beside the sentence explaining it, a small document does it — on real text, before you run anything. Under that, every way of reaching it.

One file, two papers

Mark parts of the document as belonging to a version — the one with the solutions and the one without — and choose which version prints. One file, not two that drift apart.

Name a version, then see what changed

Give a version a name before a rewrite. Later, see exactly which words changed — marked in the prose itself, not as a wall of file differences.

A notebook of documents

Chapters of a thesis kept as one object: a class, a face and margins applied to all of them at once, numbering that runs across the whole thing, and one export for the lot.

Your own shorthand, everywhere

Define \R once and write \R for the rest of the paper. The editor draws it, the search finds it and the LaTeX export writes it — and the definition travels inside the document.

An index that knows the pages

Mark a term wherever you use it and the index lists every page it appears on — the pages it will really print on, not an estimate. The same for a list of the symbols you have defined.

One self-contained file

Pictures, drawings and your own definitions all travel inside the .mfld — sending somebody a document sends them the whole document, not a file that asks for four others.

Documents you already have, opened

A paper written in another structured editor opens beside a .mfld — layouts, lists, formulas, tables, notes, cross-references and figures all come across. Whatever cannot is reported by name rather than quietly dropped.

WRITING HELP — OPTIONAL, OFF UNTIL ASKED

A second pair of eyes, on your own machine.

The obvious thing is one keystroke.

Structure is chosen from a list, a picture is dragged to the width you want, and the PDF is one shortcut away. If you have never used a math editor, this one was built with you in mind — down to the small details.

Not a demo, and nothing to install: opening and saving, images, .bib import, LaTeX and PDF export, recovery after a crash, proofing in both languages, the assistant and TikZ drawings all work in a tab.

In daily use by its author.

The builds are made by one run, on each operating system's own machine, and rebuilt on every change — so the link is always the newest work rather than the last release. They are not signed, so the first launch needs one extra step, described under each.

Honestly: Manifold is built and tested on Linux, and nobody has yet launched it on a Mac or a Windows machine. If you do, what you find is worth reporting.

Writing, mathematics and LaTeX export need nothing but Manifold. A few optional things want a program of their own — Chromium to export a PDF, TeX Live to change a drawing, a model for the writing help — and Manifold sees what is missing, says what it is for, and installs it through your own machine’s package manager when you press the button.

The editor needs no account and no subscription, and it never will — what you write is yours, in a file on your own disk, readable without it. A few things belong to a plan — keeping your documents in the cloud, writing together on a document, and the writing help when it runs on a model we provide. They are free to start with, and beyond that priced at close to what they cost to run. Never the editor.
